Only two games survived the weather and Covid-19 in the Ardal Southern League West Division.
Second placed Pontardawe Town travelled to Lydstep Park to face Cardiff Draconians who were in 3rd place going into the game. After restrictions were lifted a decent crowd turned out to watch an excellent game which was hard fought between two very good sides.
Pontardawe Town had much the better of the first half and were playing excellent football. It did though take 27 minutes for the opening goal and it came from Callum Dolman's through ball to Josh Dorward who calmly scored past Harry Johnson the home goalkeeper. Unfortunately Dorward damaged his hamstring in the process so had to be replaced by Colin Harris. In defence Pontardawe were coping well against a side that featured former Pontardawe Town centre forward Matthew Hibbs. Despite their dominance Pontardawe were unable to extend their lead and the score remained 1-0 to the visitors at half time.
The second half saw a much improved performance by the home side but it was still Pontardawe who were creating the better of the chances but they failed to convert these and as the game entered the last 10 minutes it was the Dracs that looked the more likely to score. They did just that on 80 minutes as Joe Morelli scored, assisted by Matthew Hibbs, to level at 1-1. After scoring the home side tried to retrieve the ball and in doing so an altercation took place which saw Pontardawe's Tom Grey sent off.
With 10 men Pontardawe valiantly tried to see out the game but in the 92 minute they gave away a silly penalty which captain Liam Williams scored to send the home team and crowd wild. Pontardawe almost levelled in the dying seconds but the game ended with the home side taking the 3 points and moving 2 points clear at the top of the table.
Pontardawe Town welcomed back Daryl Hughes who has signed from Port Talbot. Daryl is a centre forward who has an eye for goal and spent a lot of his youth football here at Pontardawe Town
On Saturday Pontardawe Town host West End in a local derby at Parc Ynysderw.
