Pontardawe Town progress to the Semi Finals After a Day of Drama

Gary Thomas22 Feb - 11:21

The weather gods caused chaos at Parc Ynysderw but all's well that ends well

The home side were dealt a hammer blow when the overnight forecast was wrong and the Parc Ynysderw pitch was deemeed unplayable despite two pitch inspections completed on Friday night. Prestatyn Town, who had travelled south on Friday, were understandably dissapointed with the situation but, to their credit, they agreed to delay their departure allowing this game to go ahead on the Pontardawe Parc Ynysderw 3G pitch. This was not the ideal solution, or pitch, but it was a solution that prevented the away side from having to travel south again next week.

The impact on Pontardawe Town was the loss of revenue from gate receipts and the cost of the 3G hire but it was important for the game to go ahead.

The home side welcomed back Sam Harrison, after suspension, but were without key players such as Steve Berry, Colin Harris and Eliot Thomas.

It was a very even start with the away side looking comfortable on the ball at times and putting a lot of pressure on the Pontardawe defence. Then on 13 minutes, with the rain still relentless, Jenson Stone fed Sam Harrison who gave Pontardawe the lead with his first goal for the club. It got even better on 26 minutes when Jenson Stone scored from an assist by Jesse Meacock. This was the start Pontardawe had wanted but just 8 minutes later the visitors pulled one back through Captain Alex Jones. Both sides were playing well and it was an excellent game considering the pitch and the weather conditions. The half time break was welcome and Pontardawe led 2-1 at the break.

Ollie Nedza replaced Harri Lawson due to injury at the break for Pontardawe Town. Just 2 minutes into the half Kyle Copp was brought down by Adam Reid in the Prestatyn Town goal and Kyle stepped up to beat the keeper, who nearly got to the ball, to give the home side a 3-1 lead. Again though Prestatyn Town looked dangerous and Alex Jones got his second on 55 minutes to make the score 3-2. This was turning into a cracker for the neutral but probably a nightmare for both sets of coaches.

Chances came at both ends and just as it looked that Pontardawe Town were going to see it through the visitors were awared a penalty and up stepped Robert Parry to level things at 3-3 and move the game towards penalties

With an expected lengthy added time, due to injuries, the game that was destined to end in a draw was won by the excellent Kyle Copp, who was released by Jesse Meacock, and he gave keeper Reid no chance to take it to 4-3. Celebrations unfortunately got out of hand and following an exchange of verbals Pontardawe Town coach Corey Bevan and Prestatyn Town Subsitute Goalkeeper Elias Jones were both shown Red Cards

Minutes later the game ended and, after a long day and an excellent game, it was Pontardawe Town who were victorious and go through to the Semi Finals which will take place on the weekend of March 20th-22nd.

We at Pontardawe Town would like to raise a glass to, and thank, everyone associated to Prestatyn Town who were an amazing club to work with and play against. The weather was the cause of everything but the clubs worked together and the game went ahead. We wish Aiden, Chris and their team all the very best for the rest of the season and they definetely have a new supporters club here in the South of the Country.

A massive thanks to the officials, led by Rob Fulford, who were so supportive and positive throughout the days leading up to and on the day of the match. The game was also excellently managed by all three officials

The final thanks is to the committee and ground team at Parc Ynysderw who worked so hard in the week to get the game on. Even dealing with a wind damaged dugout on Saturday morning. Special mention to Jason Dykes our Chairman who kept everyone warm with endless teas and coffees throughout the game (which at times he just couldn't watch)

Onwards to the Semi Finals ...... see you there #UppaPonty
